Tom McVie took over as the coach of the Winnipeg Jets late in the 1978-1979 season and the stickler for conditioning led the Jets into post-season play, where they swept the Quebec Nordiques and defeated the Edmonton Oilers in six games to capture the AVCO Cup championship. McVie remained with the Jets after their entry into the NHL until his dismissal midway through the 1980-1981 season.
