Markus Mattsson signed with the Winnipeg Jets in the summer of 1977 and he saw little playing time behind veteran goaltenders Joe Daley and Gary Bromley. He was traded to the Quebec Nordiques, but after six appearances in which he yielded nearly seven goals a game, the Jets re-acquired him on account of an injury to Daley.
Mattsson finished the 1977-1978 season with the Jets and took over as the starter the following season before giving way to Gary Smith.
Mattsson was part of the last two Jets' AVCO Cup championship teams and he represented the WHA in its series against Moscow Dynamo in January 1979. He remained with the Jets' organization for three seasons following their entry into the NHL and returned to his native Finland following the 1983-1984 season, where he played three more seasons before his retirement. |
