Ab McDonald signed with the Winnipeg Jets in August 1972 after a lengthy career in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Detroit Red Wings. He served as the Jets' captain in their first two seasons and provided valuable leadership as the Jets advanced to the AVCO Cup final in 1972-1973.

McDonald retired following the 1973-1974 season, bringing a close to a career that spanned 762 NHL games and 147 more in the WHA.
