Following a well-travelled NHL career, Gary Smith signed with the Indianapolis Racers in September 1978.
Smith was winless in 11 appearances with the Racers and was a free agent after the Racers folded in December. He then called the Winnipeg Jets, who offered him a tryout.
Near the end of the 1978-1979 season, Smith seized the starting job between the pipes and backstopped the Jets through the playoffs all the way to their third AVCO Cup championship.
Smith played one more season with the Jets following their entry into the NHL before retiring. |
