Ron Ashton signed with the Winnipeg Jets as a fourth-round selection in the 1974 WHA Amateur Draft. Ashton had also been drafted by the NHL's Minnesota North Stars, but chose to sign with the Jets.
Ashton came to the Jets with a reputation as a tough guy and piled up 66 penalty minutes in 36 games during his one and only season in the WHA. Though he scored only one goal in the WHA, it was the game winner in the Jets' 6-4 win over the San Diego Mariners on 28 December 1974. Ashton also scored the Jets' only goal when the Jets hosted the Atlanta Flames in an exhibition game. The game marked the first time the Jets had played an NHL opponent.
Following his brief stint in Winnipeg, Ashton spent the rest of his pro career in the minor leagues. |
